5 Classic Brain Balancing Games

day-images5.jpgHere’s a list of toys and games to get the hemispheres of your brain in balance after a hard day of left brained logic.

1. Etch-a-Sketch
The classic drawing tablet where you have to manipulate one knob in your right hand and one in your left to draw a picture. One hand handles horizontal lines, and the other verticals. Turning both knobs together creates curved lines, but only if you can do it really smoothly. It’s not easy, and it can get addictive as you feel the need to create something other than a flight of stairs!

2. Cranium
The excellent family game, also available in various junior versions, that combines sculpting, sketching, guessing and some whizzing around the house to bring a collection of objects back to the table. Cranium is great fun and great for exercising your grey matter.

3. Poi Poi or Juggling
Two physically based activities that get both sides of the brain working in harmony. Juggling needs no further explanation. Poi are coloured balls with streamers on a string (see picture above) that you twirl with the fingers of both hands to create patterns and flowing sequences of movements. They are tricky to master for adults who are already locked down to a one sided way of moving and thinking, but kids seem to find them easy to pick up.

4. Bop It Extreme
Bop it is a steering wheel shaped toy with a switch on each corner that you either spin, flick, twist, or pull. There’s also a central button that you “bop”. The game is great for group or solo play. The toy announces a string of commands “twist it, pull it, bop it” etc that can try your hands and brain in knots. It gets faster as you go and announces your score at the end of your attempt. The secret to success is to be really relaxed when you’re playing. Especially if you’re playing in a group.

5. Skipping hoop
Another physical toy. This is a great way to get physically and mentally in shape. You spin the toy with one leg and skip over it with the other one. It takes a while (or some hints from a 9 year old expert) to get the hang of it.

For a more laid back way to balance your brain you can get my Balinese Brain Balance music here for just $3. It combines natural instruments and panning effects to give an uplifting balance to the hemispheres of your brain while you simply sit back and listen.
