Autumn, the season of crisp mornings and colourful leaves. It’s also the season to really look out for your health.
Ayurveda offers a wealth of advice on staying in tune with the seasons to keep your health balanced and free from the stiffness and sniffles that Autumn can bring. Here are some natural foods to look out for to keep in step with the season and look after yourself.
Autumn Friendly Foods
Apples: high in vitamin C and potent protectors are best eaten hot in the Autumn. Try them baked or stewed for maximum cold beating power, or try this hot apple punch to keep you feeling warm and uplifted.
Autumn Apple Punch
Put two cups of good quality cloudy apple juice in a pan
add half a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger root
add one cinnamon stick
and a pinch of clove powder (or 3 whole cloves)
simmer for 5 minutes, then strain and serve
Almonds: a great bedtime snack to nourish your nervous system. A favourite of mine is Almond Vital available from Maharishi Ayurveda. To prepare your own bedtime tonic try putting 5 almonds in a cup of warm water in the morning and leaving them to soak. At bedtime, boil a cup of milk and then add the almonds and 3 stoned dates and a pinch of cinnamon and blend. Drink warm for a super tonic that’s good for your nerves and immune system.
Cinnamon: Warming and soothing, cinnamon is great for gently warming the blood and keeping colds at bay. If you are already suffering with the symptoms of a cold powdered cinnamon, or cinnamon bark can be combined with other warm spices like ginger, cloves and black pepper to give relief from symptoms.
Add a pinch of ground cinnamon to your baked apply or try a delicious herb tea blend containing cinnamon as an alternative to regular tea or coffee.
