RSS: All About that Little Orange Sign
Are you wondering why there's that orange icon at the top of practically every blog you visit? If you are - here's a quick run through of what it is and why you might be interested in using it.
That orange button is the symbol for something called RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication. It doesn't sound simple yet, I know. It took me a while to get my head around it too.
What you Might Like to Know About RSS
RSS is a way of keeping up to date with what's happening on websites you find interesting. If you like to read blogs you can use an RSS reader such as Google Reader to keep up to date with what's being posted on your favourite sites. It saves you form having to bookmark sites and then forgetting to go back and look at them again.
An RSS reader keeps track of your favourite sites for you and shows you a summary of the latest posts.
How do I do I get Started?
1. pick a free feedreader, such as Google Reader or Bloglines2. then for each of your favourite blogs that you want to keep track of, you just click on the orange RSS button on their page and add it to your feedreader account.
Your feedreader will keep track of all the latest posts on your favourite blogs for you. You can go and check it any time you want and you will see all the latest articles are automatically updated and highlighted. It's far more useful than bookmarks.
Is There Something Even Simpler?
If you're still not sure about all this RSS business you can have the latest Living by Design posts delivered directly into your email inbox. Just enter your email address in the box under the orange RSS button at the top of the screen, or at the end of every article. And you will receive an email every time I post a new article. Now that is really simple. I should, of course, promise you that I will never share your email address and I will never send you spam - and I do. I promise.
So if you want to easily keep up to date with the latest posts, tips and relaxation mp3s on Living by Design and any of your other favourite blogs, open up a Bloglines or Google Reader account or sign up to the Living by Design email delivery option.
